Saw this thread over on the TR boards and thought it would be cool to discuss it here as well. Title says it all - yes or no to swearing in the game?

I think I'm on the fence with this one. I think one or two would be acceptable given some horrible event that just happened, etc. But all the time? It's just not her character. If there are swearwords I hope they're used very sparingly, otherwise it just degrades her character imo

I decided years ago she would never utter a swearword in my stories, and it will definitely stay that way.

^I agree. I've sometimes thought that a bit of swearing would make conversations in the games, and Lara, a bit more realistic but I wouldn't want her to be swearing ever other word. I think this would make Lara look a bit dim with no imagination, when she's actually supposed to be intelligent - we're already used to Core Lara's witty remarks  But I think if a situation is bad enough then it's ok. On the other hand this is a reboot so anything could happen...

OK what about when Lara says "bloody hell" in TRU. would you class remarks like that as offensive language like swearing.
In my oppion that is bad language. say no more than that.

I think Lara's 'breeding' would mean she wouldn't be effing and blinding all over, but the occasional 'bugger', 'bloody' or similar soft swear words would be acceptable.
Saying that, many upper class toffs (as Lara is supposed to be) spend half their lives swearing and cursing like bloody hell, so maybe she is a foul-mouthed sod as well. :)

In a way I think that the TR7 and TRU should not have had Lara swearing. I found it was not in her character, but for some reason I'm okay with Lara swearing in TR9. The reason? I think that compared to Underworld and Legend, Lara has hit a HUGE crisis situation. I have noticed that in film and games that when a character is in a crisis situation, they tend to swear a bit. So in TR9 I think Lara's swearing may show that she is in a crisis situation, and desperate to survive through it, so swearing definatley puts an emotive response on an audience. (Most people swear in crisis situations, don't they?)

I'm 50/50 with this one, but I thought that the swearing used in TRU and TRL were not necessary. With TR9, I'm fine with it with the massive bad situation that Lara is in.

I thought that Lara was too "proper" to swear. She also doesn't seem to like other people around her swearing. In the original game, where she runs into Larsen near the waterfall, he threatens to stick the scion "right up your..." but twice she cuts him off and keeps him from finishing the sentence. It would be a real change in character if she started swearing now.

Bugger and bloody hell fit Lara's character just fine. Anything different may be a little out of place...

I'd say yes, sort of. In the game she's younger and it's her first time surviving, and after that (epic, I must say) trailer I wouldn't be surprised.

So this is an interesting discussion. I think that Lara isn't the kind of person to go all piratey and start dropping the F-bomb and calling people bad names. I agree with everyone who says this is out of character. But also, she is in a difficult situation. What do people do in difficult situations? The majority probably drop a bad word. If you just survived a plane crash, you wouldn't say, "Oh no, I just survived a plane crash." The response would be much more realistic, meaning that you would probably be dropping some choice words. Lara was said to say "*removed*" a lot, apparently. When I heard this at first, I thought, really? Lara doesn't say stuff like that willy nilly! But then Crystal proceeded to tell us that they weren't just going to make Lara say a bad word just to say it. This made me reassured that they were going to be smart about what comes out of Lara's mouth. So on terms of swearing, I'm sure there will be a lot in Tomb Raider, but I think Crystal will be realistic about it.

Thoughts?

@Marluxia15 - agree completely.

So long as the writers do it tastefully I think it'll be fine. I also hope they have some new writers on board...

Well it's a reboot. I wouldn't be too surprised if her character isn't what we are used to.
The new Lara is in a more serious situation.. And she is young.
As long as she aint gonna sound like some scumbag it'll probably come out alright I guess =)

I agree, but at the same time if it's changed too drastically from the Lara we love, it could severely hurt the series. We love Lara for the character we already know!

If the swearing is used within context, then yes, like speaking normally because everyone says a swear when they stump their toe or hurt themselves.

I'm with you. Though I wonder if they'd really care. We fans will end up buying it anyways :') Well most of us that is. And next to that it'll attract a new audience aswell.
Atleast that's how much faith I got in the gaming (and movie) industry nowadays.. It's often about rebooting series and rebooting fans aswell.
There's quite a number of explainations we can come up with. Some we accept some we don't =] But for the moment my curiosity still wins :)

I dont have a problem with Lara swearing, it would be more realistic if she swore as long as it was only for effect and in a way that is more amusing then deadly serious.

Well realism is all that matters nowadays..
It has two sides.. we want to be more involved in the game.. We want everything to be more realistic..
But at the same time realism is killing games as we used to like them.

We're getting spoiled and still get nostalgic feelings to the way we felt while playing games when we were younger.
And we say.. Those were the good times :)

The old Lara wouldn't belong in this modern day where realism is all that matters.
It is a good thing that reboots happen. Because this way the old stays good forever.
But it doesn't mean we have to like the new one.. Though we'd certainly want to like it.
We all still hope to see Lara again.. As we used to see and like her character. I think the best thing to do is just let go, and be open to whatever Tomb Raider 2012 is.
